I’d Like To Understand How ESPN Creates Power Rankings

To preface all this, obviously things like ESPN and NFL.com Power Rankings mean absolutely nothing. The Patriots are the #1 seed in the AFC, clinched the division and a 1st-round bye, and they’re running rampant to Houston. We all know that. These sites and media outlets do things like power rankings to get people talking and generate a little buzz on their platform; smart strategy for a company like ESPN that needs to distract people from the fact that it’s losing exorbitant amounts of money on a daily basis. But anyway, here I am taking the bait, showing you yet another way that ESPN continues to prove that even sports news can’t exist without some bias.

Screen Shot 2016-12-20 at 11.13.40 AM.png

So, as you can see, ESPN has ranked the Dallas Cowboys as the top team in the league, followed by New England. You can also see that it represents a switch from last week, when Dallas sat at #2 following a road loss to NYG and the Pats were #1 after the win against Baltimore. Fast forward to Week 15; both teams win. The Cowboys by 6 at home against the 8-5 Bucs, and the Patriots by 13 on the road against the 8-5 Broncos. So, for those of you scoring at home, think on this: the opponents had the same record, Dallas won by 6 at home, and New England won by 13 on the road (against the defending Super Bowl Champs, mind you); so Dallas’ win is worth more? That’s the game that proved that they’re the real deal? A game that they trailed after 3 quarters? A game that they were 7-point favorites in, when the Pats were only -3 at kickoff? I’m not even really angry or anything, because who cares about ESPN’s rankings really, I’m just kind of confused. And maybe that makes me a paranoid, bitchy Patriots fan who thinks everyone’s out to get them, but that’s kind of like when you cheat on a girl 3 times and she gets really suspicious about everything you do; it’s not my fault, I’m not crazy, years of torture made me like this. This is who Pats fans need to be right now, because if we’re not, we’ve seen what happens.

PS – I know nothing has been posted on this site for like a week. We’re busy dudes, and finals have been a bitch. Keep checking out RotoStreetJournal, as well as all Reed’s stuff, and we’ll keep TakeZone active when we can.

Josh Norman can’t figure out exactly why people don’t like him

I personally think a lot of times CBs in the NFL get too much shit for being cocky or self-centered. Being an NFL cornerback is the closest thing in team sports to being a boxer or MMA fighter in that you’re all alone out there; you make a great play, it’s all you, and you get roasted, it’s allllll you. So I think as a corner you’ve got a little free reign to be a dick, especially when you’re good. It’s arguably the most difficult position in the sport, comparable probably only to QB, and if you dominate at it I think you get a little leeway, which is why even though I’ve never been a fan necessarily of Josh Norman, Richard Sherman, etc I’ve always respected what they can do.

One thing I particularly like about how Norman does it is he goes after the star receivers; he’s not over here chirping the garbage slot guys, he’s going word for word with OBJ and Dez Bryant, two of the most feared receivers in the league. And even further, he’s outplaying these guys. With all that Dez has said the last few days about “dominating” Norman, the numbers show a different story: 12 career targets, 4 catches, 38 yards. Now, Dez’s Cowboys has had some success against Norman’s teams in the past, including this past Thursday, but not necessarily against Norman himself. And earlier this year was the same story; Odell Beckham may have racked up some yards on Norman and the Redskins, but Norman built permanent real estate in OBJ’s head, leading to him quite literally losing his mind on a kicking net the following week, and Washington got the win.

But now we get to the problem here, and it’s what Norman now has to say. Both guys have obviously cooled off a bit since the game and, while they aren’t stepping down from their remarks, they’re coming off a little more centered now. After Dez famously proclaimed on Twitter he’s going to post clips all week of him “exposing” Norman, he then had this to say Monday.

It’s certainly not “I’m sorry, I was wrong and Josh and I are spending the holidays together”, but it’s definitely down a few notches. Anyway, now we have a quote from Josh Norman in the Washington Post, talking about the situation with Dez and how he wants to move on from it.

Screen Shot 2016-11-28 at 6.50.22 PM.png

Oooookay, bro. Yes, people come after you. Sometimes excessively. But let’s not forget that Dez only made the “Washington should get their money back” comment because you legitimately made the same exact comment last year after a Carolina win over Dallas. OBJ may have thrown the first punch or two, but you retaliated both physically and verbally, and it takes more than two, to tango… or something like that.

Bottom line is, act like this crazy badass CB all you want and roast these receivers and chirp them until the cows come home. Just don’t act like some innocent bystander the next day when your team is 3rd in the division and your fans want answers. If you’re man enough to push and shove and talk during the game, be man enough to face the music once it’s over.

Another great NFL Sunday is in the books

Say what you will about the NFL, but since the ratings fiasco became front-page news the product on the field has gotten better and better. I’m aware that that fact has nothing to do with upper NFL management and everything to do with the players on the field who actually create the product, but still. Baby steps.

This week was no different. It actually started on Thursday, when for the first time in a few decades we had 6 teams play on Thanksgiving that were all over .500. That number is typically brought down by some perennial Thanksgiving teams that aren’t usually that great, aka the Lions, but even Detroit has been bringing it this year. The result was 2 great games both decided by 5 points or less and a late game that was basically a blowout because Andrew Luck was concussed. Nonetheless, a great Turkey Day of football that reminded us that no matter how many racist relatives we have, there will still be football. Hallelujah.

Then came Sunday, where 9 out of 12 games were decided by 9 points or less. I use that stat a lot, how many games were decided by single digits, because I think it’s a great indicator of parity in the league. If teams are constantly being blown out or blowing teams out, that’s not really good for anyone in the long run. Ratings go down, people care less about the games, and even the team that’s doing the winning becomes the Warriors eventually and everyone hates them and wants them to lose. Lose-lose.

Everywhere you look there’s something to be intrigued by. The Pats squeaked out a win at the Meadowlands over the Jets, moving to 9-2 on the year and a perfect 6-0 on the road. Now, New England hasn’t played anyone on the road that’s particularly great, with a combined record of 20-46-1, but the success is there. The surprising Titans have moved to 6-6 on the year, and although a close win over Chicago is nothing to pop champagne about it’s clear that Marcus Mariota and his boys are on the up and up, and are moving in towards a playoff spot in the weak AFC South. The Bills improved to 6-5 with a home victory while simultaneously handing Jags coach Gus Bradley his 45th career loss, a new record for NFL head coaches. Call me crazy, but I think old Gus is on the hot seat.

The Dolphins won their 6th straight after a 1-4 start, proving to be an interesting wrinkle to an otherwise dull AFC East. The Chargers beat Houston, and like Miami, San Diego continues to be an interesting sidepiece in their competitive division. Obviously a playoff spot is out of the question, with 3 of the NFL’s top 5 win totals in front of them in the stacked AFC West, but San Diego is in a great position to play spoiler come December, when they host Oakland in Week 15 and Kansas City to finish the season. And finally, we can stop pretending Russel Wilson is back; he wins games because of that stout defense, and his 151 yards and 2 INTs against Tampa Bay’s 23rd ranked defense prove that.

And finally, we had Sunday Night Football; a huge divisional tilt between Denver and Kansas City. The teams played a scoreless first quarter and sat at just 9-3 KC at halftime, but the second half and beyond did not disappoint. Emmanuel Sanders had a huge 2nd half, finishing the game with 7 grabs for 162 yards and a huge TD late in the game. Von Miller and Justin Houston both finished with double digit tackles and 3 sacks, and regulation wasn’t enough to sort this out; after a late KC TD and 2-point conversion that tied the game at 24, we went to overtime. It had the looks of another tie for a while, as Denver knocked in a field goal and KC came back with one of their own, but big old Andy Reid wasn’t having no tie; after getting great field position off a missed 62-yard game winner by McManus, Alex Smith drove the Chiefs downfield just enough so Cairos Santos could boink a 34 yarder off the left upright and through for a game winner. As someone who got a decent sum of money with a Denver win, the kick was a real roller coaster of emotions. And I think Denver’s mascot agrees (he’s down by the base of the post):

RIP in Peace, Miles.

So tonight, on Monday Night Football, the Packers will travel to that shithole we call Philly to take on Carson Wentz and the Eagles. This is a real battle of teams that had a lot of promise early in this season, only to be currently sitting on the outside looking in to the NFC Playoff picture. The Pack have lost their last 4, mainly due to RB injuries and defensive woes, while Carson Wentz just hasn’t been enough for the Eagles who now sit at 5-5. I’m looking at the odds as we speak, and it’s tough to not take Green Bay +4 1/2 here. Yeah they’ve been cold, but it’s hard to lose 4 straight and come out flat on Monday Night Football. The Pack will come to play tonight, and at the very least they’ll cover.

The Boston TE Party: Take 2

Remember in 2012, when we locked up Gronk (6 years) and Aaron Hernandez (7 years) long-term and were gonna dominate for years to come (which we’ve done anyway)? Well, I’ve given it a lot of thought, and I think what the Pats have going this year is the next best thing.

There’s no dispute that Rob Gronkowski is the best tight end in the NFL. If you dispute that, you’re a moron. He’s 32nd in the league in receiving yards (4th among TEs) and he essentially missed just as many games as Brady. He’s tied for 6th with 12 catches of 20+ yards, too. The real argument is if he’s the best TE of all time, but it’s much too early for that. People forget that Gronk is only 27. He’s gonna be doing this for a while provided he can stay healthy. And speaking of that; what about when he’s not healthy? He’s had concussion problems, issues with his back and his neck, and he’ll likely miss at least this week’s game with a perforated lung. So what’re we stuck with when he’s out? Oh, only the guy who’s 39th in the league (5th among TEs) in receiving yards. Hmm.

Yep, we all knew Marty B could be great after finally getting away from that dumpster fire we call the Chicago Bears, but I don’t think even the most optimistic Pats fan knew he’d be this good. In the first 4 games that Gronk was either out or still obviously not anywhere near 100%, Bennett had 15 catches for 247 yards and a score, and he was huge in helping out the young, unexperienced QBs that New England was forced to deploy with TB12 out (btw, that foot locker ad is AMAZING. Had to mention it. Guy’s the GOAT in football and acting? No wonder Goodell hates him). He’s a big target with great hands and can do some great things in the open field. Quick for his size, breaks tackles, and he fits right in with the “we’re good and don’t give a shit what you think about us” thing New England’s got going on. He’s kind of a weird guy, but hey, so’s Bill. Perfect fit.

So how long can this go on? That’s up to Bennett and the Pats. He becomes an unrestricted free agent after this season, and I’m sure there are a handful of teams that will offer some good money for his services. But if he continues playing this well and the Pats have a good deal of success because of it, you gotta think both parties will want him to stick around, right? This is exactly what they wanted with Gronk and Hernandez. Athletic, big guys who can line up on either side of the line and be the toughest people on the planet to cover. Guys that’ll run a 3-yard out or a skinny post for a 60 yard TD. Plus they can both run block? Gimme a break.

No matter what happens, I always have been and always will be a #InBillWeTrust guy, but I’ll trust it a lot more if we lock this guy for at least the remainder of Gronk’s contract. These two together are goofy and interesting and, on top of that, they’re looking like they’ll snag a championship or two together. The Boston TE Party is back.

Jared Goff is finally starting for the Rams

The L.A. Rams have announced that Jared Goff will be the starter for their next game. It baffles me that Goff has not started yet this season, Case Keenum is a 2nd string QB at best and that is pretty generous. Leave it to the Rams to pick number 1 overall and not start the guy until week 11. Maybe they would have had a winning record if Goff started the first game of the regular season but Jeff Fisher refuses to be anything but .500.

Sitting at 4-5, this actually could be a good position for the Rams. If Goff gives them the push they need, I would not be surprised to see the Rams sitting at 9-7 at the end of the season. This move also takes a lot of the pressure off Gurley so maybe we see a more effective running game in the future.

It’s no secret that Goff has talent, being the number 1 overall pick comes with a lot of expectations and now we finally get to see it happen. I’d love to see the Rams develop into a contender, the NFL is too much of a top-heavy league now so let’s get some competition back in the game.

Yesterday was the best day of NFL football in some time

To start, I’m not even gonna get into the Pats game last night. Not gonna let myself get roped into it. Anyone with a brain knows that was a hold at the end. That being said, that play wasn’t the reason the Pats lost. They lost because of a handful of costly turnovers, uncharacteristically bad play-calling, and pretty awful defense. It’s week 10, we’re 7-2 with the division all but clinched, and I’m not even a little worried.

Now, to the subject at hand; have yourself a day, NFL! Using a stat that the NBC SNF broadcast probably showed about 14 times last night, yesterday was the first day in NFL history that multiple games had more than 7 lead changes. One was Pats/Seahawks, and the other was the insane showdown between the Cowboys and Steelers. For the life of me I still can’t figure out why the Cowboys were 3 point underdogs going into this one, because they’re arguably the best team in the NFC while Pittsburgh is fighting for a playoff spot, but whatever. The nation learned a few things about Dallas in this game: Zeke is absolutely the real deal, their offensive line might be the best in NFL history, and this is absolutely, undoubtedly Dak Prescott’s team. I’ve written about this before, but it’s BANANAS that it’s even being considered to bench Dak for Romo once he’s fully healthy. By all means, if Dak starts to struggle and it’s costing the team games, go for a switch. But while he’s playing this well and the team hasn’t lost since week 1? No shot.

In Sunday’s 12 games, 9 of them were decided by 7 points or less. 2 were won on late field goals in the final minute, including the Chiefs, who overcame a 17-0 deficit to win 20-17. The Broncos beat the Saints on a blocked extra point returned for 2 points, an extra point that would’ve given New Orleans a 1-point lead late in the 4th. Kiki Alonso returned an interception 60 yards for a go-ahead TD with just a minute left to top the Chargers. The Titans destroyed Green Bay?! Is football back?

Maybe. The NFL has had a lot of issues this year that have nothing to do with the fact that the games themselves have sucked; concussions, domestic violence, players publicly saying they don’t trust the league or its commissioner. The league itself is on pretty thin ice, and as great as this week was it’s gonna take a lot more than entertaining football to salvage their reputation. That being said, it’s a start.

SNF Preview

Finally, we might get some real entertainment out of Primetime football. Patriots and Seahawks kick-off Sunday at Gillette in a 2014 Superbowl rematch.

This game may be the only real test that the Patriots have this entire season but what pisses me off is that analysts are saying this is a Superbowl preview for this year. Is the NFC really that bad? I have not seen one thing that tells me the Seahawks can make it that far. Russell has been average at best, the defense has been better in past years, they have one serviceable receiver, Jimmy Graham has had 3 solid games, and they don’t have a running back. So tell me again why they are making it far in the playoffs? I can see three teams in the NFC that can challenge that. Atlanta, Minnesota, and Dallas have all shown they are capable to play at a high level and make a decent playoff run.

The Patriots are number 1 in every power ranking, the Seahawks are usually sitting around 5-7 range but here is a chart with the ranks of each team in a specific category.

The only thing that Seattle has going for them is the defense but even that isn’t a big difference.

Right now the line on the game is -8 in the Pats favor which is fair considering it is a Primetime game so stats don’t necessarily pick the outcome of the game and I’ll give it to Seattle, they come to play and play hard. Saying that, I still expect the Patriots to cover that easily especially because the return of Dion Lewis, just another person the Seahawks have to worry about.

Prediction: Patriots 28 Seahawks 17

TakeZone’s definitive NFL Top 10

So we’re over the hump and officially into the 2nd half of the NFL season. Everybody and their mother does NFL rankings every week, and they’re all more or less the same. But here at TakeZone we’ve just been sitting back, watching all these idiots talk about Philly and Minnesota being legit contenders, waiting for the right time to strike. Well, everybody, that time is now. I don’t have the intelligence or attention span to rank all 32 teams (spoiler alert, Cleveland’s last), but here’s our top 10.

10. Houston Texans

This right off the bat shows what a joke the NFL is this year after a select few good teams. The Houston Texans? The team that dropped $72 million on Brock Osweiler, a guy who is currently 28th in the NFL is QBR? The team who’s best defensive player has been hurt (or is it injured?) all year? Yup, that’s what the NFL has become. I blame Goodell.

9. Seattle Seahawks

Russell Wilson has been a bit of a disappointment this year, sitting just above Osweiler at 27th in QBR and throwing for just 5 TDs through 8 weeks (they play Buffalo on MNF tonight). The play of Christine Michael has softened the blow of Marshawn Lynch’s retirement a bit, and the defense is still a strong one, but make no mistake: this team is only in first place because of a weak division. Oh and also, they were part of the worst NFL game to ever be played.

8. New York Giants

With Peyton finally done stealing as his spotlight (and Archie’s love), Eli has been a top-10 QB this year. The Giants are dead last in the NFL in rushing, yet still sit at 5-3 with a great shot at a Wild Card spot (they’re not catching Dallas unless Romo comes back). The defense is a strength and Odell has finally come out of his early season funk, but much of this team’s success has to be credited to Eli.

7. Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings were an awesome early season story. Lost their QB for the season in late August, snagged Sam Bradford for a bag of chips, and somehow remained undefeated through 5 weeks. The honeymoon is over, though, and after 3 straight losses and an offensive coordinator quitting they’re now in a battle with Green Bay and Detroit for the NFC North. The defense is still arguably the strongest in the league and the offense has kept it together despite the absence of AP (who should be back soon I think?), but the ice is getting thinner.

6. Kansas City Chiefs

Felt weird putting them this high, but it’s deserved. Alex Smith has been just good enough, completing 66% of his passes and leading this team to a 6-2 record despite the spotty play of Jeremy Maclin and a 24th ranked defense. You gotta think it’ll be hard to keep up this success, and a playoff spot seems unlikely regardless on account of sharing a division with Oakland and Denver, but nonetheless the Chiefs have been a pleasant surprise in KC.

5. Denver Broncos

Say what you want about Trevor Semien, but you could argue he’s exceeded expectations this year. CJ Anderson and the running game as a whole have been a let-down, and their aging receiving core hasn’t helped a ton either. What keeps this team in the thick of things is that goddamn defense, which currently sits at 4th in the league and features some of the most talented defensive players in the league, including shutdown corner Aqib Talib and All-World LB Von Miller (both Grade A d-bags, by the way). Again, hurts them that their division is so talented, but Denver should be in the hunt come playoff time.

4. Atlanta Falcons

Everyone’s just waiting for the day that this Falcons team completely implodes, but they’re managing to stick around in the NFC. Matt Ryan has emerged as an early-season MVP candidate, and Julio Jones just keeps on doing Julio Jones things. Freeman and Coleman have emerged as a dynamic duo in the backfield, and even the defense, a problem in the past, has been solid thus far, allowing Atlanta to stay in games late and let their explosive offense win them games. They currently sit at 6-3, leading the NFC South by 2 games, and should run away with the division barring any major setbacks.

3. Oakland Raiders

Easy choice here. I said last week that the Raiders are the only team in the AFC that I’m afraid of come playoff time. This offense is legit. I’ve been on Derek Carr for a few years now, and he’s finally proving me right, currently 10th in the NFL in QBR and throwing for 17 TDs with only 3 picks. Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree have both been consistently reliable options for him, and Latavius Murray, despite some injury trouble, is a real solid back. The defense hasn’t been phenomenal, but it’s done enough to help get this team to 7-2 and make them the favorite in the talented AFC West. I’m telling you; don’t sleep on this Raiders team, no matter how many penalties in 1 game records they break.

2. Dallas Cowboys

How bout em??? Currently at 7-1 and riding a 7 game winning streak, Dallas is without a doubt the most complete team in the NFC. Dak Prescott is a favorite for Offensive Rookie of the Year at this point, sitting at 2nd in QBR and throwing for 12 TDs and only 2 INTs (with 4 rushing TDs as well). And then there’s Zeke, the other favorite for Offensive ROY thus far. Still leads the NFL with 891 rushing yards and has found the end zone 7 times in 8 games. Yes he has an incredible offensive line, but this guy has been dynamic and elusive since day 1 and has at time singlehandedly kept this team moving through injuries and other issues. As long as Jerry Jones doesn’t go Jerry Jones on us and bench Dak for Tony Romo, this team has got to be the Super Bowl favorite from the NFC. With Romo, however, it’s a much different story.

1. New England Patriots

Duh. This is the best team in the NFL, hands down. Brady is the best QB in the league, hands down. Gronk is the best TE in the league, hands down. Belichick is the best coach in the league, hands down. Am I just a douchey Pats fan? Kinda, but it’s all true anyway. It was impressive enough that this team went 3-1 without Brady, but what they’ve done since he came back is even more impressive. What do Kirk Cousins, Eli Manning, and Dak Prescott have in common? They’ve all thrown for as many touchdowns (12) as Tom Brady, and they’ve done so in twice as many games. He’s completing 73% of his passes. He still has yet to throw an interception. It’s not even a question; as long as Tom Brady is still breathing, the Patriots will be the best team in the NFL.

Same shit different day for the Pats in Buffalo

The Pats being merely 5 point favorites yesterday was utterly offensive. Yes the game was in Buffalo. Yes they shut us out at Gillette a few weeks ago. Yes Rex Ryan’s chins could’ve had some magic up their sleeves. But Tom’s back, Shady’s out, Gronk’s at 100%, and there was absolutely, positively, undeniably no chance that the Patriots were going to lose this game.

“Same shit different day” is overused and cliche I guess, but that’s what it’s becoming with this team. Talk all week about how “oh this next opponent, that’s gonna be the one, Brady can’t keep up this pace, Rex has their number” blah blah blah and then a blowout. It’s literally getting boring. Good thing we have stuff like Gronk’s 69th TD, dildos on the field, and great glamour shots of Sexy Rexy to spice things up a bit in a town known for its spicy sauce and its actual lifestyle that’s anything but.

So now Brady is sitting at 1,319 yards, 12 TDs and no picks through four games. Is that good? If he keeps this up, he has to be in the MVP discussion, right? I understand he missed four games and that’s kind of an absurd argument in 99.9% of cases, but should this not be the exception? He’s literally scoring touchdowns at will out there. He’s a man among boys, both in age and skill level. It’s like getting a gamebreaker in NFL Street except it never goes away and it’s also incredibly good looking (if you didn’t get that reference we probably aren’t friends). I know this pace is hard to keep up and I’m not saying he’ll do it (although I’m not saying he won’t), but he’s definitely building a hell of a foundation for an MVP season. And how much of a slap in the face would that be for Goodell to finally get his way and make Brady sit 4 games then have the guy win the MVP and the Super Bowl the same season. Honestly think the dude would retire and/or jump off NFL HQ.

So the AFC is going to be an even bigger cake walk than we thought. 15-1 is looking more and more real every day, and the only team that kinda scares me come playoff time is the Oakland Raiders. They kill themselves with stupid penalties and mental lapses pretty often but that offense is the only one that even remotely compares to New England’s. Carr is emerging as a stud at QB, Amari Cooper is a top-10 receiver and Crabtree has played great as well, and Latavius Murray is legit out of the backfield. As things look right now we wouldn’t see them till the AFC Championship, so it’s way down the road, but something to keep an eye on.

So now we head to the dreaded bye week. The week we get stuck watching all these minor leaguers try to stack up to the big boys and just end up sorely disappointed. Naturally I’ll dive way too deep into my fantasy teams and gambling, so a week from this moment I’ll be hopelessly depressed and probably pretty broke. Happy bye week!

The Patriots are best NFL team and it is not even close

The NFL stinks.

I have had enough of the NFL, it is just not entertaining to watch anymore. The Patriots kill everyone they play and I almost want them to lose one of these days just so the league makes up a little ground for the number one team.

The NFL should really consider hitting fast forward to next season and giving the trophy to Brady ’cause everyone can see where this season is headed. Who can beat the Patriots? The only teams that come to mind are Seattle and Minnesota but they still seem so far away from the Pats. This league is becoming a joke and even though we are way up at the top, I would still like to see some competition.

Primetime has been an absolute joke this year. Yesterday was the worst game of the year by far. A 6-6 tie is fucking horrific. These are the top two teams in the NFC west and their kickers don’t even know that they are supposed to kick inside the two big ass yellow poles. Why does every kicker in the league suck now? More importantly, why does Stephen Gostowski suck this year? I don’t care how the ball was placed when it was snapped, you are a kicker and you have one job. One. You kick a ball for a living and make 10 times the amount of a person doing an actual job, maybe you should think about practicing for a few in your spare time and win games. What a joke. The kick that Catanzaro missed was 24 yards. If you gave me 10 chances at a 24 yard field goal, I am saying I could make 8 and I have never even tried to kick one.

The NFL sucks. Roger Goodell sucks. Kickers suck the most.
